Where to Spend the New Year with Family

The turning of a new year is as good a time as any for a party. By marking the occasion, you’ll have a chance to reflect on all that’s gone on over the last twelve months, and to think about what you’re going to do differently the next time around. Plus, it’s good to check in with friends and family and to start the New Year off with good vibes. This applies even if you’re going to be going out taking up an ill-advised New Year’s fitness resolution first thing in the morning!

If you’d like to make things extra special, then you might go for a road trip. There are plenty of places in the UK that like to take New Year’s Eve seriously, and which might provide a bit of a break from the standard New Year celebrations we’re all accustomed to. You might even share the driving responsibilities with the help of some temporary car insurance.

Where to Spend the New Year with Family?

1. St. Ives, Cornwall

Where to Spend the New Year with Family - St. Ives, Cornwall

St. Ives is among the country’s most famous tourist destinations, thanks in large part to its gorgeous seafront. It’s more commonly associated with summertime, for obvious reasons, but that doesn’t mean that it isn’t a wonderful, picturesque place to see in the New Year. You might even mark the start of January with a jog down the best beach.

2. Allendale, Northumberland

A picturesque little village with a gorgeous historic cottage just about everywhere you looks, a visit to Allendale is a great distraction at any time of year. It’s set in the middle of the North Pennines Area of Natural Beauty. To mark New Year, there’s the Tar Bar, which is a traditional procession of burning whisky barrels through the middle of town. Just make sure that you book your accommodation in advance, as demand tends to be high.

3. Lake District

Lake District

The Lake District is a part of the UK that’s a little more secluded and quieter at this time of year – which is part of the charm. With that said, there are a few small towns where you’ll find public gatherings to mark the big moment. Keswick and Bowness tend to attract the most tourists, and the fireworks over Lake Windermere tend to be a spectacle worth savouring.

4. North Somerset

There’s no shortage of special activities to enjoy during New Year in Somerset. When you’re done hiking through the snow-blanketed countryside, you might head over to Weston-Super-Mare, or nearby Bristol. There are many wonderful New Year’s events being held and nice outdoor bars across both, but again, you’ll want to book in advance to avoid disappointment.
